ERRATA AND MORE ON PSPICE TUBE MODELS _____________________________________ If you are viewing this in Notepad, click on Edit, Word Wrap to turn on word wrap. It helps to maximize the window. Equation [6] in the article "Improved Vacuum-Tube Models for Spice Simulations" by Norman Koren, Glass Audio, Vol. 8, No. 6, 1996, contains an error. This equation, which relates an output transformer's quality factor Q (the ratio of the primary shunt inductance to leakage inductance) to the coefficient of mutual coupling, KALL, used in SPICE models, should be corrected to read KALL = 1-1/(2Q) The exact expression, sqrt(1-1/Q), was derived from first principles. The expression, 1- 1/(2Q), is an approximation that is accurate for all practical cases. Equation (3), the screen grid current for pentodes has a minor typo: the symbol mu should follow the hanging slash ("/") . In listing 3, in SUBCKT 6550, the line that starts with "G2 4 E" should start with "G2 4 3." We have added several tube models and made some minor corrections to Table 1. All of there are included in the accompanying TUBE.LIB file. They were determined from published graphs and tables, available from many sources. Small-signal triode data was obtained from"The Audio Designer's Tube Register" by Tom Mitchell. EL34 data came from the Audiomatica Sofia web page. 6C33C curves came from Borbely, Glass Audio 5/96, p. 8, Fig. 1 (the curve on the left for two cathodes), and capacitances came from the Gold Aero web page. 2A3 and 300B data came from The Parts Connection Catalog & Resource Guide, volume 2. The latest Pspice evaluation package, version 6.3, is available free on a CD ROM from MicroSim by phoning 1-800-245-3022, or can be downloaded from www.microsim.com. I recommend ordering the CD ROM because it contains a complete set of manuals and tutorials: everything you need to know to master Pspice. A list of free SPICE V3.0 packages and other useful information can be found on the World Wide Web site by searching "spice v3.0" and "spice 3.0" on your favorite search engine. (Mine is Alta Vista.) If you Email a request to kormar@cts.com, I will send a package of Pspice tube models on a shareware basis (free with no obligation unless you need telephone support). This package contains a symbol and model library, files for generating plate curves for triodes and pentodes (for adding your own models), a sample circuit (the original PAS preamplifier), and some basic instructions on getting started with Pspice and installing the libraries. I am preparing an article on some wonderful preamplifier designs developed using SPICE. Stay tuned.
